The startup Backplane, backed by American Music Award winning artist Lady Gaga, held a hackathon at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, on Saturday. The event was later broadcast in Times Square for 15 minutes each hour on the NASDAQ screen, on voice music search engine SoundHound, and on Gaga’s fan page.
Although the singer was not able to appear at the event herself, hackers got their fix of music as Backplane hosted an 8 hour developing period where participants were asked to create a music demo. Hackers were asked to combine music with Nike’s NikeFuel API, which tracks physical activity during a workout and synchs it to an iPod or iPhone. This isn’t Backplane’s first highly public project: just last month, the company helped Gaga launch her own social network, a Pinterest-like website where users could vote up photos of Lady Gaga, called LittleMonsters.com.
