For the first time since the inaugural Academy Awards in 1929, a silent film has won the honor of Best Picture!
But The Artist not only won Best Picture at last night’s 84th Annual Academy Awards. The non-talkie was also lauded with a total of five Oscars, including Best Actor for Jean Dujardin, and Best Director for Michel Hazanavicius.
Maryl Streep won Best Actress for her portrayal of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, and Octavia Spencer won Best Supporting Actress for The Help. 82 year-old actor Christopher Plummer took home his very first Oscar for his supporting role in Beginners, making him the oldest actor to receive the award.
The award for best Original Song went to Bret McKenzie, of Flight of the Conchords fame, for his song “Man or Muppet” from The Muppets.
